Vancouver a great place to play the bagpipes

With fall days soon to be upon us, the joy of escaping out into our city parks to play bagpipes in Vancouver, Coquitlam, Burnaby, West Vancouver and Burnaby will soon be over.

Ah well, it’s been a great summer.  Despite SFU’s third place finish (I think they should have been first), our other Grade one band (Dowco Triumph Street) made the cut again this year, and moved into 12th place overall.

I also discovered an ideal treed semi-private park in Coquitlam early in the spring. I’ve quite enjoyed playing among the 100+ year old oak trees, far from the madding crowd. On some days, I’ve invited friends, and we’ve sat and talked over a cold drink while playing a tune now and then. No complaining neighbours or bylaws to worry about.  It’s even fun for the kids to play among the trees.

OK, now we prep for winter. The long cold months ahead of us are broken by the joyful thoughts of practicing, practicing and practicing new tunes, new exercises and pipe maintenance.

At least with the regular bagpiping opportunities in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, at the head table banquets, ceremonies, and even funerals, we get to put on our uniform’s once more, strike in the bagpipes and think long ahead to the days of spring and summer that are coming once again.
