Bagpipers and drummers deep in the heart of Washington State and BC

If you’re looking for a dose of bagpiping and highland dancing in the heart of  Washington State farming country, I think I’ve found it. The Prosser Games are set for this weekend, June 19th.

Obviously there’s not a large Scottish descendant population here, because the activities that are scheduled for the 10th Annual Prosser Scottish Festival and Highland Games include the ignition of an anvil (which launches into the air) and a wooden catapult that appears to fling a keg of beer half way across the Games field.  If you don’t believe me, check out the video.

There’s the usual assortment of Games activities – highland dancing, piping, heavy events, dunk tank, spinning wheels, etc. I assume there is a beer garden – what Highland Games is without one? Where would pipers go afterward? I’m sure the volunteers and workers will put on a great show, and if you’re up for a late spring drive, this might just be the ticket.

Lest my Canadian friends argue I’ve spent a bit too much time promoting American bands and events, I would also like to remind everyone of the BC Legion Highland Gathering, scheduled for this weekend in Squamish. These Games are  #5 in my list of Top 10 Bagpiping and Highland Games in British Columbia and Beyond, from May 1.
