STOLEN: Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Regimental Mace

It is Vancouver’s most historic and decorated infantry regiment, with battle honours that reach back to World War I and three Victoria Cross recipients, including one for Bagpiper James Cleland Richardson.  Now the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, who celebrates their 100th anniversary this month, is battling to recover one of their most historic artefacts.

The Regimental Mace (pictured here) dates back to when the regiment was formed on November 24, 1910. The Mace was granted to the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada by the Imperial Seaforth Highlanders of Scotland which formed in 1881. On October 29, 2010, the drum sergeant of the Canada Seaforth’s had his vehicle stolen from the parking lot at Queens Park Arena in New Westminster, BC. The Regimental Mace was inside and has not been recovered.

All efforts are being taken by police and band members to find the Mace in time for the “Trooping of the Colours” at UBC’s Thunderbird Arena on November 27.

Another key infantry artefact is also missing. Pipe Major Edmond Esson’s original Seaforth Dirk was taken from the Warrant Officers and Sergeant’s Mess during a dinner.  It too has not been found.

These are valuable and sentimental objects that mean a great deal to the members of this organization who have served this country in time of need; many of whom have given their lives to protect our freedom. The audacity of the thieves and neer-do-well’s continues to astound me.  I suggest everyone who reads this post checks their local Craigslist to see if these items are being sold, or to keep an eye out at flea markets and roadside junk sales.  The Seaforth’s deserve our help and assistance – and we owe it to them
